Athletes using their influence to create positive change for women and girls through sport.
The aim of the #AthleteInfluencers initiative is to put athletes in a position where they can make the most of their clout as role models. It is informed by a belief that “you can’t be what you can’t see” and was instigated by our patrons based on their own experiences as elite sportspeople.
“Role models are people who (individually or collectively) are aware of their potential to influence others and intentionally choose to use that influence to create positive change for women in sport.”
By showcasing the stories of athletes who prove what’s possible, who are accessible and who come from a diverse range of backgrounds – the #AthleteInfluencers initiative helps to challenge stereotypes about what success looks like and who has the right to play sport. It does this by:
- Encouraging athletes to define and then articulate the issues that matter most to them and why. We do this through a blend of one-to-one coaching, peer mentoring and group events.
- Connecting athletes to relevant skills development opportunities – for example training on public speaking, social media skills or working with journalists.
- Providing access to a range of media, corporate and educational platforms.
Our #AthleteInfluencers programme provides concrete evidence of what women and girls can do in sport, in the boardroom and beyond. In order to deliver the programme we work closely with businesses, sponsors and media allies who share our commitment to realising female talent.
